Digital Eye Strain

As our world has continued to evolve digitally, so has our daily usage of technology. Even though our devices allow us to stay connected, their usage is not without repercussions.

If your lifestyle requires you to spend a lot of time in front of a screen, you should be adjusting your screen or eyewear to best protect your eyes. Our practice carries protective eyewear and contact lenses to help protect your eyes.

Visiting for regular eye exams is the best way to help your digital eye strain. We can work with you to find the best solution, reducing your symptoms and bringing your eyes relief. Additionally, we will make sure issues that are more severe are not causing your symptoms.

The irritating symptoms of digital eye strain can affect us all and can quickly become frustrating.

Symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Double vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Watery or dry eyes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sore neck, shoulders or back
  • Trouble keeping your eyes open
  • Sore, tired, burning or itching eyes

Protecting yourself from digital eye strain can be easy by making simple changes to your technology use.

Try these adjustments:

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule
  • Set the brightness of your screen to match your surroundings
  • Keep your screen at an arm’s length from your eyes
  • Keep your screen 20 degrees below eye level

The 20-20-20 Rule

No matter the time you spend on a screen every day, the 20-20-20 rule is one of the best ways to keep your eyes from getting strained digitally. The rule helps to reset the muscles in your eyes, giving them a much needed break!

Every 20 minutes, focus on an object 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds. In only 20 seconds, you are reducing the damage done to your eyes from digital devices.

Following these simple tips will help relieve headaches, blurred vision, and eye strain when you are using digital devices.
